Course Reserves: Home

Course Reserves Policy in 3 Steps

CIA Gund Library provides course reserve services for CIA degree-program classes at the request of individual CIA faculty.

Every semester, submit a Course Reserves Request form for each course you wish to have items on reserve. This includes both print and electronic reserves ("eReserves").

  • Faculty selects materials for both print and eReserves and determines loan periods for print reserves.
  • Print reserves are limited to 20 items per course due to space constraints.
  • Only CIA Library materials are accepted for reserves. Faculty-owned print copies can also be put on reserve. Faculty copies will be used in-library only and returned to faculty at the end of the semester.
  • Kindle eBooks are also available as another electronic format for course reserves. See our Kindles for Course Reserves page for more info.
  • Items may be put on reserve for multiple concurrent courses and/or sections.
  • We encourage faculty to upload a syllabus if possible. This can help us acquire electronic resources and time manage processing requests.
  • Please submit a separate Course Reserves Request form if you've already submitted a form and want to add more items or a syllabus to a course.
  • If you're unsure of all course materials you're using for the full semester, please at least submit requests for materials needed in the first week of class ASAP before the semester. You can submit additional materials later on a separate request form.
  • We will contact faculty if we can't accommodate a course reserves request.
  • Items can only be requested and reserved for one semester. Please re-submit requests for subsequent semesters.

Want to put a resource on reserve that's not currently in our collection? Submit a Resource Request.

You can request both print and electronic resources. Specify on the form that the resource is intended for reserves.

Streaming video licensing is also available at CIA Library. Email Laura Ponikvar, CIA Gund Library Director, for more info or if you have any other questions about library acquisitions.

For other questions about course reserves, please email Jackie Lagunzad, Access & Circulation Coordinator and CIA Library's Course Reserves contact.

Please submit all forms ASAP.

This helps expedite the processing of materials and ensure they're available for students by the start of the semester.

The library processes all requests in the order they are received.

We make every effort to have course materials available by the first week of the semester. Library staff pulls, processes, and shelves print resources and post links to electronic resources to the eReserves Canvas module. Personal print copies must be received before putting on reserve.

Print reserves access

See CIA reserves lists by course on the Case and Affiliate Libraries Catalog. Print reserves are not listed on the eReserves guide. Print reserves are kept behind the library circulation desk during the semester. Students can come to the circulation desk and ask library staff for the print title(s) to check out.

eReserves access

See eReserves on Canvas. eReserves are not listed on the reserves lists on the Case Catalog. Students need to log into Canvas to view eReserves. Links can be accessed on and off campus. However, off-campus access requires logging into the proxy server.

Loan period options for print reserves

In Library

3-hour borrowing for use in library only. We use this loan period if one is not specified an item on the form or if an item is being used for multiple concurrent courses and/or sections. Fines: $1/hour overdue.

Overnight

If borrowed before 4pm: The item can only be borrowed for 3-hour in library use only. If borrowed after 4pm: The item can be borrowed overnight and returned the next day the library is open. Items must be returned by 10am if returning Monday-Friday or 2pm if returning Saturday or Sunday. Fines: $1.00/hour overdue.

One Week

Can be taken out of library. Items must be returned 7 days after checkout. Fines: $10.00/day overdue.

Copyright & Fair Use for CIA course reserves

CIA Library makes every effort to comply with current copyright law regarding the use of photocopied materials.

Photocopies of items can be placed on reserve, with conditions. A copy can be placed on reserve once and will be made available via eReserves unless otherwise requested in print. If a copy of this same material is requested for another semester, faculty must provide written permission from the copyright holder. The library may be able to provide assistance in obtaining copyright permission or investigating other options if possible.

To comply with Fair Use guidelines:

  • The amount of photocopied material on reserve should be a small portion of the total original work. A general library practice is to allow one article, one chapter of one book, or 10% of one original work.
  • Photocopies (print or electronic) cannot be copied, printed, or downloaded.
  • Photocopies via eReserves are only for use by faculty and students enrolled in CIA courses for purposes associated with these courses. These materials cannot be retained, distributed outside of eReserves, or used for unauthorized courses.

Course reserves does not replace course packs.

Course Reserves Confidentiality Statement

Course reserves borrowing records are confidential, as are all library circulation records.

The library staff isn't permitted to provide the names of anyone who has used course reserves materials.
