One hundred years after the Tulsa Race Massacre, Across the Tracks is a celebration and memorial of Greenwood, Oklahoma In Across the Tracks: Remembering Greenwood, Black Wall Street, and the Tulsa Race Massacre, author Alverne Ball and illustrator Stacey Robinson have crafted a love letter to Greenwood, Oklahoma. Also known as Black Wall Street, Greenwood was a community whose importance is often overshadowed by the atrocious massacre that took place there in 1921. Across the Tracks introduces the reader to the businesses and townsfolk who flourished in this unprecedented time of prosperity for Black Americans. Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen? a Reader by
Adam Pendleton (American, b. 1984) is a conceptual artist who uses historical and aesthetic content from visual culture to explore the ways in which context influences meaning. Drawing from a substantial archive that references both artistic and cultural movements, including Dada, Minimalism, Black Power, and the Civil Rights movement, among others, Pendleton reconfigures words, forms, and images to provoke critical questioning. Published to accompany a multimedia installation at MoMA, this reader serves as a primer and handbook to the exhibition and features an artist intervention of photocopied textual sources, many of which directly relate to the content and programming of the exhibition. The project questions the notion of the museum as repository, and addresses the influence that mass movements, including those of the last decade such as Black Lives Matter and Occupy, can have on the exhibition as form. Drawing on the work of figures as disparate as Michael Hardt, Ruby Sales, and Glenn Gould, Who Is Queen? seeks to explore the nexus of abstraction and politics.

This anthology of children's artists' books from the PLA Archive (Oasis for Art Books) in Merano, Italy, is designed like a children's book itself--small in scale, paperback, with strong tear-proof paper. Inside, one finds detailed reproductions of rarely seen books by Keith Haring, John Armleder, Andy Warhol and Bruno Munari, among many others. One particular standout is an exquisite little book by Japanese artist Katsumi Komagata, a colorful, abstract pop-out book with an origami-like design. In Designing a New Tradition, Rebecca VanDiveRebecca VanDiver is Assistant Professor of African American Art at Vanderbilt University.r presents a fresh perspective on the art and career of Loïs Mailou Jones. Considering the importance of Africa for Jones's work and examining the broader roles played by class, gender, and politics in constructions of African American art histories as a whole, VanDiver makes a convincing case for Jones's lasting place in American art history. VanDiver repositions Jones's work within the canon of American art, situating the artist's production within the larger cultural and aesthetic debates of the twentieth century, including modernism, abstraction, the Harlem Renaissance, feminism, Négritude, and Pan-Africanism. In doing so, VanDiver reveals one of Jones's most significant contributions to American art: the development of a composite black aesthetic that negotiates African, American, and European artistic traditions to reflect the increasingly fragmented nature of twentieth-century black identity and diasporic experiences. When Life magazine asked Gordon Parks to illustrate a recurring series of articles on crime in the United States in 1957, he had already been a staff photographer for nearly a decade, the first African American to hold this position. Parks embarked on a six-week journey that took him and a reporter to the streets of New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Unlike much of his prior work, the images made were in color. The resulting eight-page photo-essay "The Atmosphere of Crime" was noteworthy not only for its bold aesthetic sophistication, but also for how it challenged stereotypes about criminality then pervasive in the mainstream media. They provided a richly-hued, cinematic portrayal of a largely hidden world: that of violence, police work and incarceration, seen with empathy and candor. Parks rejected clichés of delinquency, drug use and corruption, opting for a more nuanced view that reflected the social and economic factors tied to criminal behavior and a rare window into the working lives of those charged with preventing and prosecuting it. Transcending the romanticism of the gangster film, the suspense of the crime caper and the racially biased depictions of criminality then prevalent in American popular culture, Parks coaxed his camera to do what it does best: record reality so vividly and compellingly that it would allow Life's readers to see the complexity of these chronically oversimplified situations. "Hold tight. The way to go mad without losing your mind is sometimes unruly." So begins La Marr Jurelle Bruce's urgent provocation and poignant meditation on madness in black radical art. Bruce theorizes four overlapping meanings of madness: the lived experience of an unruly mind, the psychiatric category of serious mental illness, the emotional state also known as "rage," and any drastic deviation from psychosocial norms. Model is known primarily as an influential teacher to notable 20th-century photographers such as Diane Arbus and Larry Fink, but her own work as a pioneering and irreverent street photographer reveals a unique and grotesque vision of humanity--the close-up shots, the use of flash, the exasperated contrasts all accentuate the imperfections of the bodies, the flashy clothes, the coarse gestures. There is no interaction between Model and her subjects, who tend to be caught suddenly, while they eat, sing or gesticulate awkwardly, transformed by her shots into the characters of an irreverent human comedy. This is the first Italian-language volume to be published on the artist.
Liza Lou by

Master Drawings Rediscovered by
For 50 years the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg held a treasure trove of work which had been taken from German private collections to the Soviet Union at the end of World War II, and was believed by the outside world to have been lost or destroyed. This book presents 89 of these works - drawings by major 19th- and 20th-century artists, including Goya, Daumier, Rowlandson, Cezanne, Delacroix, Ingres, Millet and Toulouse-Lautrec. Something over Something Else by
In November 1977, The New Yorker published a feature-length biography of artist Romare Bearden by Calvin Tomkins as part of its "Profiles" series. The essay, titled Profile: Putting Something Over Something Else (using Bearden's words to describe the creative process), brought national focus to Bearden, whose rise had seemed meteoric since the late 1960s. The experience of the interview prompted Bearden to launch an autobiographical collection he called Profiles. He sequenced the project in two parts: Part I, The Twenties, featuring memories from his youth in the South and in Pittsburgh, and Part II, The Thirties, about his early adult life in New York. Bearden collaborated with friend and writer Albert Murray on a short statement to accompany each piece. These appeared scripted onto the walls of the Profile exhibition to lead viewers on a visual and poetic journey. This landmark volume reassembles and reconsiders Bearden's Profile series. Beyond providing the opportunity to explore an understudied body of work, the project will investigate the roles of narrative and self-presentation for an artist who made a career of creating works based on memory and experience. It will also reveal Bearden's own gestures away from the autobiographical and toward a broader view.

Tomás Esson: The GOAT is the first monograph of Afro-Cuban artist Tomás Esson. It features paintings created over a span of thirty-five years and showcases a distinct style that overflows with energy, biting humor, and suggestive narratives that often involve highly sexualized, monstrous creatures alongside the heroes of the Cuban Revolution. Coming of age in turbulent Havana, Tomás Esson (b. 1963) was a fierce critic of the social reality he saw around him. His work was showcased in a number of controversial exhibitions in the late 1980s, as the artist became a central figure in the decade's renaissance in Cuban art and he began to exhibit internationally. He left Cuba in 1990 and moved to the USA. Alongside his works this publication provides newly commissioned scholarship and reprints of critical texts that are no longer in circulation, proof that Esson is one of Cuba's most important post-Revolutionary artists, whose work remains timely today.

Under the Skin: Feminist Art and Art Histories from the Middle East and North Africa Today is set out to show what is beneath the surface, under the appearances of skin, body, colour and provenance, and not the cultural fixities or partial views detached from the realities of communities, cultures and practices from the area. Through 12 chapters, Under the Skin brings together artistic practices and complex histories informed by feminisms from diverse cultural and geographical contexts: Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. The aim is not to represent all of the countries from the Middle East and North Africa, but to present a cross-section that reflects the variety of nations, cultures, languages and identities across the area-including those of Berber, Mizrahi Jews, Kurdish, Muslim, Christian, Arab, Persian and Armenian peoples. It thus considers art informed by feminisms through translocal and transnational lenses of diverse ethnic, linguistic and religious groups not solely as a manifestation of multiple and complex social constructions, but also as a crucial subject of analysis in the project of decolonising art history and contemporary visual culture. A Best Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post Part graphic novel, part memoir, Wake is an imaginative tour-de-force that tells the "powerful" (The New York Times Book Review) story of women-led slave revolts and chronicles scholar Rebecca Hall's efforts to uncover the truth about these women warriors who, until now, have been left out of the historical record. Women warriors planned and led revolts on slave ships during the Middle Passage. They fought their enslavers throughout the Americas. And then they were erased from history. Wake tells the "riveting" (Angela Y. Davis) story of Dr. Rebecca Hall, a historian, granddaughter of slaves, and a woman haunted by the legacy of slavery. The accepted history of slave revolts has always told her that enslaved women took a back seat. But Rebecca decides to look deeper, and her journey takes her through old court records, slave ship captain's logs, crumbling correspondence, and even the forensic evidence from the bones of enslaved women from the "negro burying ground" uncovered in Manhattan. She finds women warriors everywhere. Using a "remarkable blend of passion and fact, action and reflection" (NPR), Rebecca constructs the likely pasts of Adono and Alele, women rebels who fought for freedom during the Middle Passage, as well as the stories of women who led slave revolts in Colonial New York. We also follow Rebecca's own story as the legacy of slavery shapes her life, both during her time as a successful attorney and later as a historian seeking the past that haunts her. Illustrated beautifully in black and white, Wake will take its place alongside classics of the graphic novel genre, like Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and Art Spiegelman's Maus.
