Christina Quarles by
In Quarles' paintings, limbs, torsos and faces collide and merge with familiar domestic objects made strange through color and gesture Los Angeles-based artist Christina Quarles (born 1985) paints bodies that are subjected not only to the weight and gravity of the physical world but also to the pleasures and pressures of the social realm. Her work explores the universal experience of existing within a body, as well as the ways race, gender and sexuality intersect to form complex identities. Quarles, whose art is often considered in relation to her identity as a queer, cisgender woman of mixed race, is among the vanguard of artists who are upending the white-male-dominated art scene. This book features paintings and drawings from throughout Quarles' career. Working mostly in acrylic, Quarles populates her canvases with polymorphous figures that reference her background in life drawing, but with an expressionist spin all her own. Faith Ringgold (born 1930) is a painter, mixed-media sculptor, performance artist, teacher and writer best known for her narrative quilts. As an avid civil rights and gender equality activist, Ringgold's work is highly political; in 2020, the New York Times described her as an artist "who has confronted race relations in this country from every angle, led protests to diversify museums decades ago, and even went to jail for an exhibition she organized." She has had solo shows at Spectrum Gallery (1967), Studio Museum in Harlem (1984) and, most recently, a five-decade retrospective at the Serpentine (2019). Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Brooklyn Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art, among others.

Frida Kahlo was just one of them: between 1930 and the 1960s many more women artists contributed to the Surrealist movement than has hitherto been assumed. The male Surrealists surrounding André Breton mostly saw them only as partners or models, but this volume shows how much more these women artists had to offer. The dominant topic of male Surrealists was woman as goddess, she-devil, doll, fetish, child-woman, android, and dream creature. The women artists of Surrealism, on the other hand, were searching for a new female identity and incidentally discovered their own language of forms. The Day May Break, photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya in late 2020, is the first part of a global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. The people in the photos were all affected by climate change, displaced by cyclones and years-long droughts. Photographed at five sanctuaries, the animals were rescues that can never be re-wilded. As a result, it was safe for human strangers to be close to them, photographed so close to them, within the same frame. The fog on location is the unifying visual, as we increasingly find ourselves in a kind of limbo, a once-recognizable world now fading from view. However, in spite of their loss, these people and animals are the survivors. And therein lies possibility and hope.

A native of Dortmund, he studied at Kunstakademie D sseldorf under Joseph Beuys and distinguished himself early on as a unique painter whose figurative style greatly contrasted with the conceptual, minimalist, or more abstract works of his fellow students such as Imi Knoebel, Blinky Palermo, Reiner Ruthenbeck, or Katharina Sieverding. Ignoring all contemporary trends, for instance Pop Art, Fluxus, Zero, Minimal, and Concept Art, Tadeusz consistently explored traditional subjects and genres, including still lifes, landscapes, and interiors. In his sometimes radical images, Tadeusz aimed to develop unconventional modes for the depiction of traditional motifs, experimenting with color, form, and space. Certain topics he has continually re-examined over the years. Above all, the investigation of bodies - the living, human nude and the dead, animal carcass - presents a central theme that runs through his oeuvre. Much of his work revolves around the female body, as the epitome of both life and its source. Allowing for a great variety of poses and disparate settings, it is one of the artist's most important motifs. Conceived in conjunction with an exhibition opening at The Museum of Modern Art in 2022, this publication focuses on an exceptional gift of 108 photographs by women artists from the collection of Helen Kornblum, distinguished member of MoMA's Committee on Photography. The publication will highlight this significant acquisition, which contributes to the Museum's continuous effort to research and rethink twentieth century art history narratives by amplifying the presence of women artists. Like the exhibition, the book will be structured around thematic groupings, arranged chronologically, and each prefaced by a short text. A New York Times best art book of 2021 In 1889, avant-garde artists in Paris formed a brotherhood to promote a radical new direction in art. Adopting the name Nabis--Hebrew for "prophets"--they aimed to capture subjective experience and emotion in their paintings, prints, and drawings. This volume focuses on intimate views of home and family by four Nabi artists: Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947), Maurice Denis (1870-1943), Félix Vallotton (1865-1925), and Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940). During the Museum of Modern Art's 90-year history, African American architects and designers have had little to no purchase in its permanent collection and exhibition histories, reflective of larger trends in museum and architectural discourses at large. The exclusion of Black architects and designers from the academic imagination have largely been waylaid in favor of dominant formalist and stylistic concerns. This book, conceived as a field guide to accompany the exhibition at MoMA, examines how contemporary architecture may address the varied contexts of systemic anti-Black racism that have fostered violent histories of discrimination and injustice in the United States. The invited contributors reimagine the legacies of race-based dispossession in ten American cities and how individuals and communities across the United States have mobilized Black cultural spaces, forms, and practices as sites of imagination, liberation, resistance, and refusal. Robert Frank: Good Days Quiet by
In this, Robert Frank's newest book, he both acknowledges and moves beyond his acclaimed visual diaries (2010-17), which juxtapose iconic photos from throughout his career with the more personal pictures he makes today and suggestive, often autobiographical text fragments. In Good Days Quiet Frank's focus is life inside and outside his beloved weather-beaten wooden house in Mabou, where he has spent summers for decades with his wife June Leaf. Among portraits of Leaf, Allen Ginsberg and Frank's son, are images of the house's simple interior with its wood-fuelled iron stove, humble furniture and bare light bulbs, as well as views of the land and sea by the house: snow-covered, windswept, stormy or lit by the dying sun. Frank's Polaroids scanned for the book show various deliberate states of deterioration and manipulation at his hands, including texts that move from the merely descriptive ("watching the crows") to the emotive ("memories," "grey sea-old house / can you hear the music"). As always in Frank's books, his message lies primarily in the photos' lyrical sequence, an influential approach to the photobook pioneered by and today well at home in his 93-year-old hands. A handsome, affordable introduction to the modernist polymath who charted the rhythms of color across textiles, illustration, painting and more Sonia Delaunay was a true pioneer of modernist abstraction; breaking with the figurative vocabulary that subordinated color to subject matter, she placed dynamic color interaction at the core of her vision, whether expressed through painting, book illustration or costume and textile design. Drawing inspiration from both traditional Russian crafts and the modern frenetic metropolis, Delaunay's work reflects the drastic changes ushered in by industrialization. Through her polyvalent practice, Delaunay helped construct the new modern woman that she herself embodied: equal parts avant-gardist, creative entrepreneur and businesswoman. This richly illustrated catalog showcases the range of Delaunay's work as it unfolded over 60 years, from abstract paintings and works on paper to textile design, garments, fashion photography, books and carpets--even a brightly colored sports car. Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) migrated to Paris in 1906 and became a key figure in the city's avant-garde scene. During these early years, her paintings underwent a formal shift influenced by the vivid colors of Fauvism. She soon met her husband, fellow artist Robert Delaunay, and the couple pioneered a fusion of Cubism and Neo-Impressionism that they termed Simultanism, which denotes abstract painting that uses color in a manner comparable to the use of sound and rhythm in music. In 1964, Delaunay became the first living woman artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre.
