Ben Patterson: in the State of Fluxus by
Performing and visual artist Ben Patterson (born 1934) was a founding member of Fluxus' participatory, do-it-yourself, anticommercialist avant-garde network. While many Fluxus artists, influenced by John Cage's precedent, employed conceptual techniques borrowed from music (e.g., the event score), Patterson's fusion of art and music was informed by his background as a classically trained double-bassist. His "Variations for Double Bass" (1960), for example, was played with the titular instrument balanced upside down on its scroll. Published for a retrospective at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, this volume includes an anthology of Patterson's scores, edited by Fluxus scholar Jon Hendricks; a chronology of the artist's life and work; a CD compilation of his musical performances from 1961 to 2009, produced by Alga Marghen; and essays by a variety of scholars, assessing the career of one of Fluxus' foremost and wittiest artists.

Matthew Barney: Redoubt is a comprehensive catalogue of the artist's newest project, which centers on a two-hour film that creates a complex portrait of the American landscape by layering classical, cosmological, and American myths about humanity's place in the natural world. In the film, the goddess Diana and her two attendants traverse the rugged terrain of Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains in pursuit of the elusive wolf, while an Engraver (played by Barney, b. 1967) furtively documents their actions in copper engravings and provokes a series of confrontations. The publication comprises hundreds of stills that track the film's narrative, as well as essays--some lyrical, others more objective--that approach Redoubt through disciplines such as ecology, art history, and dance. Available for a limited time, this artist's book by renowned visual artist Tacita Dean explores her chance encounters with objects in the archives of the Getty Research Institute. As the Getty Research Institute artist in residence in 2014-15, Tacita Dean was asked to define a subject and identify a path of research. What she proposed instead was a project titled "The Importance of Objective Chance as a Tool of Research." Her idea was to allow chance to be her guide. Dean researched randomly, picking out boxes from the collections without knowing their contents, meandering through objects and images from sources as varied as medieval alchemy books to twentieth-century artist letters. New Grammar of Ornament by
Updating Owen Jones' 1856 classic: the new standard typology of ornament, spanning centuries and cultures Ornaments are omnipresent: they can be found on buildings, fabrics, jewelry, tiles, ceramics and wallpaper. Scorned at the outset of the modern age, ornament has long since returned to architecture and influences design drafts as much as tattoo motifs. In New Grammar of Ornament, German architect and designer Thomas Weil compares current ornamental objects with the results of archaeological research on ornamental artifacts, and concludes that there is an anthropological constant. From the recurring arrangements of stripes, rectangles, triangles and dots and the frequency of the forms of floral ornaments used, he derives a new "grammar of ornament." More than 160 years after Owen Jones' publication of that name, New Grammar of Ornament is a new reference work. It categorizes the variety of ornamental forms used worldwide and places them in a major art and cultural-historical context. Thomas Weil (born 1944) studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and early on focused on interior design and design. Since 1974 he has been working on the subject of ornamentation, which he has incorporated into numerous facades and walls as an artist. He gives national and international lectures and courses on ornamentation and is a lecturer on ornamentation at the Munich Academy of Design and Art.
Not Your Mother's Mammy by
Not Your Mother's Mammy examines how black artists of the African diaspora, many of them former domestics, reconstruct the black female subjectivities of domestics in fiction, film, and visual and performance art. In doing so, they undermine one-dimensional images of black domestics as victims lacking voice and agency and prove domestic workers are more than the aprons they wear. An analysis of selected media by Alice Childress, Nandi Keyi, Victoria Brown, Kara Walker, Mikalene Thomas, Rene Cox, Lynn Nottage, and others provides examples of generations of domestics who challenged their performative roles of subservience by engaging in subversive actions contradicting the image of the deferential black maid. Through verbal confrontation, mobilization, passive resistance, and performance, black domestics find their voices, exercise their power, and maintain their dignity in the face of humiliation. Not Your Mother's Mammy brings to life stories of domestics often neglected in academic studies, such as the complexity of interracial homoerotic relationships between workers and employers, or the mental health challenges of domestics that lead to depression and suicide. For decades he has reinvigorated street photography and reportage through keen observation and an empathetic eye for social subjects. Initially a painter and filmmaker, Waddell brings questions about the very notion of realism to picture-making. Self-taught photographer Hugh Mangum was born in 1877 in Durham, North Carolina, as its burgeoning tobacco economy put the frontier-like boomtown on the map. As an itinerant portraitist working primarily in North Carolina and Virginia during the rise of Jim Crow, Mangum welcomed into his temporary studios a clientele that was both racially and economically diverse. After his death in 1922, his glass plate negatives remained stored in his darkroom, a tobacco barn, for fifty years. Slated for demolition in the 1970s, the barn was saved at the last moment--and with it, this surprising and unparalleled document of life at the turn of the twentieth century, a turbulent time in the history of the American South. Hugh Mangum's multiple-image, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio to show us lives marked both by notable affluence and hard work, all imbued with a strong sense of individuality, self-creation, and often joy. Seen and experienced in the present, the portraits hint at unexpected relationships and histories and also confirm how historical photographs have the power to subvert familiar narratives. William Blake's Printed Paintings by
Among William Blake's (1757-1827) most widely recognized and highly regarded works as an artist are twelve color printed drawings, or monoprints, conceived and executed in 1795. This book investigates these masterworks, explaining Blake's technique--one he essentially reinvented, unaware of 17th-century precursors--to show that these works were produced as paintings, and played a crucial role in Blake's development as a painter. Using material and historical analyses, Joseph Viscomi argues that the monoprints were created as autonomous paintings rather than as illustrations for Blake's books with an intended viewing order. Enlivened with bountiful illustrations, the text approaches the works within the context of their time, not divorced from ideas expressed in Blake's writings but not illustrative of or determined by those writings.
