Among the Ruins by
A comprehensive survey of Arnold Genthe's life and his legendary photography of San Francisco's 1906 earthquake and fire Berlin-born photographer Arnold Genthe (1869-1942) was an established member of San Francisco's art community when disaster struck on April 18, 1906. Though Genthe lost much of his photographic equipment and most of his negatives in the inferno that swept through the city that day, he borrowed a pocket camera and immediately began to document the destruction, ultimately producing more than 170 views starting within hours of the earthquake and continuing for several weeks. Unlike the many commercial photographers who cashed in on the demand for earthquake-related imagery, Genthe printed few of his negatives and rarely displayed them. After the artist's death in 1942, the Legion of Honor purchased his original earthquake negatives, and, in 1956, the museum contracted Ansel Adams to print twenty-two of the works in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the disaster--however, the majority of Genthe's views of the disaster were only accessible in the form of small contact prints. With 2018 marking the 75th anniversary of this important acquisition, the curators and conservators of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts embarked on an ambitious project: the team digitally scanned, catalogued, and published this important body of work. Like the exhibition, this book will provide an overview of Genthe's life and work, trace his journey on April 18, 1906, and illustrate the aftermath of the disaster in terms of the impact on the city's infrastructure and its residents. Due to the Achenbach's undertaking, many of the photographs in the catalogue will be newly printed from ultra-high-resolution scans created from the original negatives, making this catalogue the definitive collection of Genthe's work.

Art of the Northwest Coast by
Originally published in 2006, Art of the Northwest Coast offers an expansive history of this great tradition, from the earliest known works to those made at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Although non-Natives often claimed that First Nations cultures were disappearing, Northwest Coast Native people continued to make art during the painful era of colonization, often subtly expressing resistance to their oppressors and demonstrating the resilience of their heritage. Integrating the art's development with historical events following contact with Euro-Americans sheds light on the creativity of artists as they appropriated and transformed foreign elements into uniquely Indigenous statements. Factory Summers by
The legendary cartoonist aims his pen and paper toward his high school summer job For three summers beginning when he was 16, cartoonist Guy Delisle worked at a pulp and paper factory in Quebec City. Factory Summers chronicles the daily rhythms of life in the mill, and the twelve hour shifts he spent in a hot, noisy building filled with arcane machinery. Delisle takes his noted outsider perspective and applies it domestically, this time as a boy amongst men through the universal rite of passage of the summer job. Even as a teenager, Delisle's keen eye for hypocrisy highlights the tensions of class and the rampant sexism an all-male workplace permits. Guy works the floor doing physically strenuous tasks. Since Tate Modern opened in 2000, the Turbine Hall has hosted some of the world's most memorable and acclaimed works of contemporary art, reaching an audience of millions. Photographed in cooperation with the World Holocaust Remembrance Center Yad Vashem, the portraits mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 1945. These compelling pictures capture the weathered faces of Jewish men and women who witnessed and endured the atrocities of the Holocaust, allowing viewers to discern their struggles and exceptional physical and spiritual resilience. Presented close-up and larger-than-life, every feature of Martin Schoeller's subjects provides us with a piece of personal and collective history: their faces observe us, their gazes hold us. The lines they bear evidence horrors endured, as well as the triumph of their survival and building their lives anew. Survivors offers a portal to the vast legacy of the Holocaust victims--both those who survived, and those who did not--and is an attempt to preserve the incomprehensible for generations to come. We don't know these people, but we can thank the artist who portrayed them. In Media Primitivism Delinda Collier provides a sweeping new understanding of technological media in African art, rethinking the assumptions that have conceptualized African art as unmediated, primary, and natural. Collier responds to these preoccupations by exploring African artworks that challenge these narratives. From one of the first works of electronic music, Halim El-Dabh's Ta'abir Al-Zaar (1944), and Souleymane Cissé's 1987 film, Yeelen, to contemporary digital art, Collier argues that African media must be understood in relation to other modes of transfer and transmutation that have significant colonial and postcolonial histories, such as extractive mining and electricity. Collier reorients modern African art within a larger constellation of philosophies of aesthetics and technology, demonstrating how pivotal artworks transcend the distinctions between the constructed and the elemental, thereby expanding ideas about mediation and about what African art can do.

Faculty and staff in higher education are looking for ways to address the deep inequity and systemic racism that pervade our colleges and universities. Pedagogical partnership can be a powerful tool to enhance equity, inclusion, and justice in our classrooms and curricula. These partnerships create opportunities for students from underrepresented and equity-seeking groups to collaborate with faculty and staff to revise and reinvent pedagogies, assessments, and course designs, positioning equity and justice as core educational aims. When students have a seat at the table, previously unheard voices are amplified, and diversity and difference introduce essential perspectives that are too often overlooked. In particular, the book contributes to the literature on pedagogical partnership and equity in education by integrating theory, synthesizing research, and providing concrete examples of the ways partnership can contribute to more equitable educational systems. At the same time, the authors acknowledge that partnership can only realize its full potential to redress harms and promote equity and justice when thoughtfully enacted. This book is a resource that will inspire and challenge a wide variety of higher education faculty and staff and contribute to advancing both practice and research on the potential of student-faculty pedagogical partnerships. Shiny objects attract and fascinate us. While they used to derive their power from their rarity, today shininess is pervasive: its attraction is a foundation of consumer culture and it has attendant effects on our architecture, our conceptions of the body, and our production of spectacle. In Shiny Things, Leonard Diepeveen and Timothy van Laar examine the meanings and functions of shininess in visual art and material culture. Exploring the works of a diverse range of artists--including Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, Jeff Koons, Carolee Schneemann, Audrey Flack, Fra Angelico, and Gerard ter Borch--the authors open the discourse to topics as disparate as automobiles, Richard Nixon, and Liberace. Bron and Ray are a queer couple who enjoy their role as the fun weirdo aunties to Ray's niece, six-year-old Nessie. Their playdates are little oases of wildness, joy, and ease in all three of their lives, which ping-pong between familial tensions and deep-seeded personal stumbling blocks. A reconsideration of the life and legacy of the revolutionary artist of the Parisian avant-garde. Despite the popularity and success the French model and painter Suzanne Valadon (1865-1938) enjoyed in her lifetime, her work has received scant attention since her death. While her art broke new ground, her reception was often overshadowed by criticism of her personal life, and her fame as an artist was eclipsed by that of her son, Maurice Utrillo. With her art and lifestyle alike, Valadon cared little for convention and challenged behavioral codes. Seen in the twenty-first century, Valadon's confrontational works still challenge viewers with their unapologetic presentations of women's bodies, female desire, and the conflicts of marriage and motherhood. This fully illustrated exhibition catalogue explores new ways of looking at Valadon's life and pioneering work. Contributions by Nancy Ireson, Martha Lucy, Denise Murrell, Adrienne L. Childs, Lauren Jimerson, and Ebonie Pollock tackle the artist's treatment of the female figure, her navigation of the art world, and her depictions of an as-yet-unidentified Black model. South African artist Lisa Brice reflects on her interest in the painter, finding resonance between Valadon's pioneering work and contemporary artists and events. Visions of the Self: Rembrandt and Now by
A legendary painting by Rembrandt forms the centerpiece of this exploration of self-portraits by leading artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Published to commemorate an exhibition presented by Gagosian in partnership with English Heritage, this stunning volume centers on Rembrandt's masterpiece Self-Portrait with Two Circles (c. 1665), from the collection of Kenwood House in London. The painting is considered to be Rembrandt's greatest late self-portrait and is accompanied here by examples of the genre from leading artists of the past one hundred years. These include works by Francis Bacon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lucian Freud, and Pablo Picasso, as well as contemporary artists such as Georg Baselitz, Glenn Brown, Urs Fischer, Damien Hirst, Howard Hodgkin, Giuseppe Penone, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman, and Rudolf Stingel, among others.
